How to install Claude skills

Once a skill is on, you do not call it by name. Ask for the task and Claude picks the skill whose description fits.

In Claude (web and desktop)

  1. 1Turn on code execution in Settings → Capabilities. Skills need it, on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
  2. 2Open Customize → Skills and switch on the Anthropic skills you want.
  3. 3For your own or a community skill, upload its folder as a .zip on the same screen.

On Team and Enterprise plans an admin may need to allow skills for the organization first.

In Claude Code

Add Anthropic's repo as a marketplace once, then install the bundle you need.

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file of instructions, plus any scripts or reference files it needs. Claude keeps only the short description in view and loads the full skill when a task matches it, so you can install many without crowding the conversation.

If you work with Office files, install the document-skills bundle: it adds the docx, pdf, xlsx and pptx skills in one go. If Claude builds UI for you, add frontend-design. How are skills different from connectors and plugins?

Skills teach Claude how to do a task. Connectors give Claude access to another app, such as Notion or Linear, through a remote MCP server. Plugins are install bundles for Claude Code and Cowork that can carry skills, slash commands, subagents, hooks and MCP servers together.

Is there a Claude skills marketplace?

Skills are distributed through plugins. Anthropic's plugin directory lists plugins and the skills they include, and in Claude Code you can add any Git repository as a marketplace with /plugin marketplace add, which is how Anthropic's own skills repo installs.

Can I write my own skill?

Yes. Create a folder with a SKILL.md file that has a name and description at the top, followed by instructions. Put it in ~/.claude/skills/ for Claude Code, or zip it and upload it under Customize → Skills in Claude. The official skill-creator skill walks you through writing and testing one.
