Questions people ask
What does the IHME GBD connector do in Claude?
Ask Claude questions about the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation's Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study — the largest and most comprehensive effort to quantify health loss across places and over time — for any country, region, cause, or risk factor. The connector retrieves results directly from the GBD database; it does not model or generate new values. Query deaths, DALYs, YLLs, and YLDs; risk factor exposures and attributable burden; life expectancy, healthy life expectancy (HALE), child mortality, population, and fertility; and detailed injury, impairment, and pathogen data — with Socio-demographic Index (SDI) context for development comparisons. Beyond direct queries, five ready-made profiles generate narrative overviews with tables, charts, and maps: Location, Location Comparison, Disease, Sub-cause Comparison, and Risk-Outcome. Ask naturally, then narrow, broaden, or challenge the results through follow-up — no special commands required. Example questions: • What are the top causes of death in Nigeria? • How has life expectancy in China changed over time? • Which risk factors drive the most cardiovascular disease in Latin America? • Compare child mortality across India's states. Think of it as a fast, conversational front-end for exploring GBD data — complementing IHME's GBD Compare and Results Tool rather than replacing them.
Is the IHME GBD connector official?
It is made by Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and carries the Anthropic verified mark in Anthropic’s directory. This site is independent and lists it from the official directory.
What is the IHME GBD MCP server URL?
https://gbdmcp.healthdata.org/mcp. It is a remote MCP server hosted at gbdmcp.healthdata.org. Paste it into Claude as a custom connector, or add it to Claude Code with: claude mcp add --transport http ihme-gbd https://gbdmcp.healthdata.org/mcp
How do I add IHME GBD to Claude Code?
Run "claude mcp add --transport http ihme-gbd https://gbdmcp.healthdata.org/mcp" in your terminal, then start Claude Code, type /mcp, choose ihme-gbd and sign in to IHME GBD. Add "--scope user" to make it available in every project.
Do I need a IHME GBD account?
Yes. You sign in to IHME GBD when you connect it, and Claude works through that account.
Can Claude change or delete my IHME GBD data?
Judging by tool names, 7 of its 45 tools can change data. The other 32 only read. In Claude you can choose, per tool, whether Claude must ask before using it.
